Your Soul & Inspiration: A 90 Minute Meditation To Keep Your Head Up To

Can you believe it’s 2019? I can’t! The tides of time seem to shift and be stuck all at once, and we find ourselves with nearly a decade slipped into the rearview mirror as we launch headlong into a future. What can we count on? What can we trust? I always find grounding in music,…

I’m not a person of many regrets but one thing I do regret was not getting to see The Fancy Miss Nancy before she passed away a few months ago. Thankfully I can relish her vast catalog of singles and LPs for the rest of my earthly days. Love, Peace and Hairgrease to one of the great art/activists on what would have been her 82nd Birthday. . . . #waybackwednesday #thefancymissnancy #nancywilson #happybirthday #blackhistorymonth #instagay #instaqueer #queermusichistorian
It’s been exactly 60 years since Irma Thomas made the R&B top 40 with “You Can Have My Husband” and we should all be thankful that she decides to grace stages with her vast and beautiful catalog. Her introspective and passionate vocals rightly land her on the throne as The Soul Queen of New Orleans. If you haven’t yet, probably head over to her website and see if she’s coming to a venue near you. You’ll never regret it. Join me in wishing Irma a happy 78th Birthday. . . . #ageofaquarius #soulqueenofneworleans #irmathomas #happybirthday #instagay #instaqueer #queermusichistorian
It wouldn't be Motown Records's 60th Anniversary without visiting their premiere singer, songwriter and producer. As legend goes, Smokey Robinson met Berry Gordy with a notebook of songs, of which maybe one or two Gordy considered viable, yet he was impressed with the teenager's moxie. Of course, there's so much more to the story of William Robinson Jr than that. One way to experience it, there's taking a moment and listening to what someone has created. When I look over Motown writers catalogs there's a wealth of familiar and not so familiar Motown names conquering obscure Motown material, while most of the chestnuts are outside interpretations. It's a Valentine's Day gift to you from Smokey to you, via a little curation from me.I hope this overview brings you closer in appreciation with one of our greatest living artists. But seriously why isn’t there a Popcorn Popper that plays “Buttered Popcorn” by The Supremes? . . #mybabylikesbutteredpopcorn #thesupremes #letsallgototgemovies #florenceballard #instagay #instaqueer #queermusichistorian
I’d call her Smarty Pants too. She warned us about that man that was armed and extremely dangerous, so she kept so many of us one step away from all sorts of bad decisions. One of the earliest and most powerful voices of the early disco sound, Rochelle Fleming celebrates her 69th Birthday today! . . . #ageofaquarius #happybirthday #rochellefleming #firstchoice #discolegends #instagay #instaqueer #queermusichistorian
The Bay didn’t waste ANY time with asking “Are You Ready” so I’m pulling my best “Yes, I’m Ready” (also call it my welcome home party) with @saturdaynightsoulparty 2/23 at @theknockoutsf! #anothersaturdaynight #saturdaynightsoulparty #soulpatrol #soulinthecity #sfnightlife #instagay #instaqueer #queermusichistorian #queerdj
I just cleared the snow off my car so no excuses for you. You’d be proud too if you wrote your biggest hit record. Barbara Lewis took to writing all of her early efforts, including “Hello Stranger.” She continued to churn out a brilliant spectrum of soul into the early seventies. Today we welcome our favorite stranger to her 76th year of life. . . . #ageofaquarius #saturdaysoul #barbaralewis #happybirthday #hellostranger #instagay #instaqueer #queermusichistorian
He is quite literally, Motown’s first Money Man. 60 years ago this Summer, Barrett Strong laid his honeysuckle vocals over one of the funkiest grooves ever heard in the fifties for one of the greatest (?) anthems to surviving Capitalism ever. He would go on, by the mid-60s, to line his pockets with songwriting royalties. Give Barrett Strong what he wants for his 78th birthday, y’all. . . . #turnuptuesday #tunefultuesday #moneythatswhatiwant #ageofaquarius #barrettstrong #happybirthday #instagay #instaqueer #queermusichistorian
It’s @notsokwyet approved and taking away your Monday Blues at #85 on the @mixcloud R&B charts. What’s that you ask?
